The REAL ID Act of 2005 is designed to improve safety standards for federal and airport facilities across the country. It standardizes what application documents are required for U.S. residents to obtain a state-issued ID. States not in compliance with the act may issue IDs that do not serve as proof of certain identifiers, such as a license holder’s citizenship status. As such, REAL IDs will be required for residents to enter certain federal facilities and military bases, as well as to board domestic airline flights.
You can obtain a Tennessee REAL ID card in person from any licensing office in the state. After obtaining a REAL ID drivers license or identification card for the first time, you can proceed renew your credential online or at self-service kiosks. To apply for a REAL ID, you must visit a driver service center with proof of citizenship or legal residence, proof of state residency and proof of a Social Security Number (SSN).
